今日は65年前の1945年2月23日に硫黄島おいて日本軍が死守すべく死闘を行ったすり鉢山の山頂にアメリカ海軍海兵隊たちが星条旗を掲揚したとされる日です。

65 years ago from today, on February 23rd 1945, the U.S. soldiers raised the Stars and Stripes on the peak of Mount Suribachi in the Battle of Iwo Jima or Operation Detachment during World War II.

星条旗が一度立てられた後も何度かそれを降ろし日章旗を立て、しまいには血染めの日の丸を掲揚した硫黄島の日本兵の奮闘に敬意を表すると共に鎮魂を祈りたく思います。

After this event, Japan carried on hostilities to defend Iwo Jima at all costs. Imperial Japanese soldiers continuously attempted to replace the flag of the Stars and Stripes with the Rising Sun. At length, they put up the flag of the Rising Sun that was dyed with their blood. I truly respect the Japanese troops for their sacrifices and pray that they rest in peace.
